Participant education is a key ingredient to a successful 401(k) plan.

We would argue that most business owners and plan participants do not know the fees that they pay for the 401(k) plan. This is because somehow along the way, the 401(k) plan lost its way. The market became dominated by huge financial service companies that wanted to cram as many of their high-fee, proprietary funds in the fund lineups as possible. Those exorbitant fund fees were used to hide everything from record-keeping expenses to broker compensation, making it impossible for plan sponsors and plan participants to truly understand costs.

Those same providers refused to take on the liability of fund selection and performance monitoring, instead forcing the executives of the companies who operated the plan to shoulder that liability.

Meanwhile, participants were left to fend for themselves, forces to choose from a baffling menu of investment options to cobble together an investment portfolio that they alone were responsible for managing and maintaining.

It doesn’t have to be this way. The 401(k) plan can work. It can meet the needs of plan sponsor and plan participants alike, and do so in a cost-effective manner.

We hold an annual trustee meeting with the plan trustees to review the plan and make sir that we are meeting the expected goals. We also do an annual participant educational meeting to discuss the markets, plan performance and answer any questions on the participants minds.

If you would like to see a sample fee disclosure that we provide to all of our 401k clients, please contact us today and we would be happy to send you one.

Since the inception of JDH in 1999, we have worked with our 401(k) plans to build trust through complete fee transparency and putting the participants first. We ensure they our clients have a positive experience as the plan sponsor in addition to each participant gaining an understanding of their current retirement account and how to appropriately plan for the future.

A well crafted investment policy statement is key to a successful experience.

To carry out the purpose of an endowment or foundation, the mission of a pension plan or the statutory requirements imposed upon a fund, those in a leadership role can benefit from an orderly, long-range strategic planning process. Our recommended approach takes clear, measurable steps and adapts them for specific client situations. The carefully designed strategic plans we help clients develop contain reasonable and achievable goals and objectives.

We work with our clients in educating them on fiduciary, governance and investment issues. One of the most important ways that we educate clients is through reviews of their policies, programs and ongoing meetings.
